Atland #323 - A Room For The Week

I love character design.  So when I write a script that says, "Bartender" -- I start getting creative when it comes time to draw.  I think this guy is the offspring of a mermaid and a human. And the tattoos were a last second addition.

And if you're keeping score, I think this is the first time I've ever drawn a pewter flagon in a tavern.  I almost always opt for the wooden ones.

See you in 2!

  1. Very nice! I'm hoping the mer-geezer won't meet his bloody end soon. (On the other hand I'm sort of curious about what his insides look like.)

Also, I'm fairly sure I don't want to know what Vonstadt needs quadruple rent's worth of privacy for.

  2. The bartender worked out great. The facial hair (might be hair, might not be!) and the tattoos are really nice.

What bugs me is why you used the ellipsis incorrectly. Why not just leave that panel balloon-less? It would be more subtle and fit with the cinematic nature of the shot.

  3. Solid work. I quite agree about the "quadruple rent raising questions" aspect.

I'm pretty sure the ellipsis was a "Hmmm" indicating just that and it works for me.

I hope any surprises are unpleasant, and all of them are addressed to Vanessa's father.

  4. This is great.
Is there any way I could get the line art for this page. I'm looking to practice some coloring skills. I''m inspired by your bartender and the coins.

  5. Just got back to Atland after being MIA for a few months. Great job telling the Chimera story and I can't wait for our heros to catch up to the new villain!

  6. My machine went tits-up and I've only just got back around to revisiting my favourite fantasy kingdom. You continue to sketch in interesting characters with a light touch; like Robert Rodriguez. That Bartroll looks so cool.

  7. However, I'd like to see you add in a "tinkle tinkle" on the sword's little bell; like the jangle of spurs in a western.
